Most research peptides ship lyophilized — freeze-dried into a stable powder. Handled correctly, that powder keeps well; handled poorly, it can degrade. Here's a practical overview for the lab.
Why lyophilized?
Removing water slows the chemical reactions that break peptides down, so a lyophilized vial is far more stable in transit and storage than a solution. Sealed, lyophilized vials are generally heat-stable for shipping — brief time at room temperature in transit is expected and fine.
Storage — powder
- Long-term: store the sealed, lyophilized powder at -20°C (colder for very long-term).
- Keep it sealed until use, and protect from light and moisture.
- Let a cold vial return to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation drawing moisture into the powder.
Reconstitution basics
Reconstitution is simply dissolving the powder in an appropriate solvent for your protocol (commonly bacteriostatic or sterile water for lab work). Add solvent slowly down the vial wall rather than directly onto the powder, and swirl gently — don't shake vigorously, which can stress the peptide.
Storage — after reconstitution
- Store reconstituted solutions refrigerated at 2–8°C.
- Use within the working window appropriate to your protocol; solutions are less stable than the dry powder.
- Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, which degrade peptides.
Good habits
- Label vials with the compound, lot, and date.
- Keep the lot-specific COA on file for reference.
- Minimize time at room temperature once opened.
